Engaging with community members and linking you to public policy that affect you is one of the joys in being your Member of Parliament. Through my office, I organize many public events to inform, discuss, consult, and recognize members of the community.
- Our 2017/18 Constituency Youth Council (CYC) built on the success of their first year with a fantastic book drive in December, a Café-style consultation on Social Innovation in January, and a “Pechakucha” policy debate/contest in April. We are already recruiting members for next year’s CYC, and I invite young people to join!
- Vancouver Quadra’s Hidden Heroes get public recognition! For the second year running, 20 members of the Vancouver Quadra community received a Hidden Heroes Award, nominated for their outstanding (and perhaps under-recognized) volunteer service. At Point Grey Fiesta we celebrated them with certificates and special pins made from Parliament’s original copper roof. I look forward to recognizing more Hidden Heroes in 2019 and need your help identifying them! Please contact my office for more information.
- This summer our office signed off on 398 Canada Summer Jobs, helping university students find work to help pay for next year’s tuition, and enabling local organizations and businesses to expand service to the community. I look forward to visiting many of the projects, and to meeting the hosts and students this summer!
Connecting with you is my top priority
The first half of 2018 has been chock-full of events we organized to seek your feedback and ideas: MP Policy Breakfasts, roundtables, and Policy Cafés. Topics of discussion varied, including trade agreements the plight of Millennials, orca whale science, housing affordability, Canada-China policy in the Trump Era, and Canada’s feminist foreign policy. Soon we will discuss Government Investment in Research and Innovation with UBC President Santa Ono.
Canada Day! Stop by & say “Hi” at Locarno Beach
In a few days I will be celebrating Canada Day with Vancouver Quadra friends and neighbours. Once again I invite you to bring your friends and family to join the fun at Locarno Beach for our annual barbeque and cake! Please bring chairs if you would like to sit, and don’t forget the sunscreen.
