This fall the International Panel on Climate Change issued an uncharacteristically blunt Report. You may have written me about their message – that effective action to limit greenhouse gas pollution of earth’s atmosphere has become very urgent. We’ve all noticed that fires and floods are increasingly frequent and severe. The IPCC researchers concluded that the world has almost run out of time to avoid serious and lasting damage.
That’s why the federal government implemented a system to apply a price on carbon pollution, in all provinces that don’t already have their own adequate measures. A price on carbon is one of an array of mechanisms Canada is putting in place to make sure we achieve our international climate emission targets – an outcome to which the government is fully committed. British Columbia is leading the country with its carbon tax policy; now our economic growth leads the country, with green innovation being an important contributor.
By the time you read this I will have returned from a week at the COP24 international climate conference in Poland, representing the Canadian government. I look forward to updating you in the new year!
Happy Holiday Season to you and your family!
