Investments to renew the Canadian Coast Guard

Dear Friends and Neighbours,

As West Coasters, we each have our story about the Canadian Coast Guard and the great work they do. Problem is, their vessels are many decades old and badly in need of replacements.  New vessels are needed so they can efficiently protect our marine environment, maintain safe shipping, intercept unauthorized vessels and rescue mariners in trouble.

Our government was elected on the promise to take marine safety and environmental protection seriously. That’s why in 2016 we renovated and re-opened the Kitsilano Coast Guard station axed by the previous government.

This May Prime Minister Trudeau announced the good news that Canada will be funding $15.7 billion to build 18 new, large ships! This constitutes the largest single investment ever made to renew the Canadian Coast Guard fleet.

Sixteen ships will be built by Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards in North Vancouver, the West Coast’s primary shipbuilding centre. This will create good, local jobs supporting Lower Mainland families and communities, in addition to reliable long-term support for marine industries and those who spend time at sea. A modern Coast Guard fleet is critical for protecting our waters and coastal ecosystems – from Kits Beach to Spanish Banks and beyond – in the decades to come.

Warm regards,

Joyce Murray, MP
