Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra and President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government
The Hon. Joyce Murray was first elected to Parliament in 2008. Joyce served as Parliamentary Secretary from 2015 until 2019, when she was appointed President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government. She previously served on Standing Committees on Trade, Health, Fisheries and Oceans, Environment and Sustainable Development, and most recently Defence, as the Liberal Critic for National Defence. Since 2011 Joyce Chaired the Liberals’ Northern and Western Caucus, and Co-Chaired her Party’s weekly Monday Policy and Platform Caucus in Ottawa until 2015.
Joyce’s Private Members Bills and Motions include a crude oil tanker traffic ban on BC’s North Coast; and increasing accountability and transparency of Canada’s security agencies including the Communication Security Establishment (CSE). In 2012 Joyce ran in the Liberal Party of Canada leadership race, placing second on a “sustainable society” platform of action on climate change, women’s equality, electoral reform, and legalizing marijuana.
Before entering federal politics, Joyce was elected to BC’s Legislative Assembly serving as a cabinet minister in the BC Liberal government 2001 to 2005. Her political career followed 25 years spent building an international reforestation company she co-founded that has planted over a billion trees. Her interest in environmental sustainability was expressed in her Master’s thesis on global warming, which contributed to her receiving the SFU Deans Medal for top MBA graduate of 1992. Joyce has three adult children and lives in Vancouver Quadra with her husband Dirk.
