MP Joyce Murray – Statement on Nowruz, Persian New Year

This past Saturday, I had the pleasure to attend and speak at the Nowruz New Years Celebration of the Kurdish-Canadian community, at the Slovenian Society Hall in Burnaby with many recent Syrian refugees attending.

Please see below for the text of my Statement in the House of Commons on Nowruz, Persian New Year:

Mr. Speaker,

Today marks the Persian New Year festival of Nowruz, which is celebrated by Persian, Central Asian, Kurdish, and Ismaili Canadians. Norwruz has been celebrated since ancient times and serves as a testament to the longevity of the millennia-old Persian culture.

This wonderfully colourful occasion is when we come together to mark the first day of spring – an annual victory of the spirit of the sun over cold and darkness, and a time where nature renews its vows with life.

The Ancient Persians saw this as a symbolic moment – that in the constant struggle between good and evil – in all dimensions, physical, emotional, moral and spiritual – good will always prevail.

To the community in Vancouver Quadra, and to Canadians across the country, I hope you enjoy your gatherings with family and friends around the Haft-Seen, and wish for you the greatest of blessings in the new year.

Noruzetan Pyruz!
