A vibrant and thriving middle class is essential to a strong economy. Vancouver’s middle class is struggling to make ends meet, while the benefits of economic growth are being shared by fewer and fewer Canadians. Living and raising a family in our neighbourhoods is increasingly a challenge. Income inequality, the income gap between the wealthy and the poor has risen in Canada over the past twenty years, according to the Conference Board of Canada. This trend is unhealthy and increases social tensions in society.
Our government wants to change this and that’s why we took action. As promised in the 2015 election we have cut taxes for 9 million Canadians, providing roughly $3.4 billion in annual tax relief to the middle class, while raising taxes on the wealthiest one percent to pay for the cut. In addition our progressive Canada Child Benefit offers up to $6,800 in non-taxable benefits each year, for low income children under age six!
Our government believes in equality of opportunity and wants to see hard-working Canadians of all income levels thrive. We are working hard to present fair solutions that will generate sustainable jobs, reduce income inequality, and grow the economy in the years ahead.
